Brainy portraits
Comment

“the most fulfilling thing man can do is to create. This exercise was incredibly introspective and generally amazing. Thank you.”

International visiting student
Suitability: KS2, KS3, KS4, A Level

Rationale

Sherrington was fascinated by the brain and how it could generate the mind – which remains a mystery.

Art allows pupils to explore their understanding of science, and to express their own thoughts, feelings and ideas.

An awareness of our mind, body and thought processes and focussing on the moment has been found in Mindfulness to help calm. Creating also focuses.

Activity

Show pupils images of the brain and encourage them to create a brainy self-portrait.

“swiftly the head-mass becomes an enchanted loom where millions of flashing shuttles weave a dissolving pattern, always a meaningful pattern”

Sir Charles Sherrington from ‘Man on his Nature’ (1940)
